Grading System in Education

Grading System Education: Most typically, report cards are the first suggests that of activity a child’s progress through faculty. The progress of the child is determined either by the marks attained by him or through grades. The grading system is the process of evaluation of a student's performance in various subjects or areas, on various parameters in the school. Grades are usually assigned in letters (A, B, C, D, E) as a range, or as a descriptor (like, excellent, very good, good, fair, needs improvement). As per the conventional method of education in our country, the performance of the student is judged by the marks achieved in examinations. Introduction of the grading system is a very good step to change the age-old education system of the country and a debated topic. However, the grading system is better than the marking system; it has its advantages and disadvantages both.

Grading systems have benefited many students in taking off pressure from them for achieving good marks. The children were always living under the pressure of studies and getting good marks. Their knowledge was confined to their textbooks only. They were used to learn the lessons and mugging up them to be able to answer the question paper. Marks given were on the basis of answers mugged up to clear the examination. Consequently, this was taking the students away from the actual source of knowledge. The grading system has effectively given students a platform for overall development. Students are now taking seriously the extracurricular activity also as the grades of these activities is also included in the final grading. The grading system is also giving the students the time to think and learn many other things apart from the textbook lessons.

Earlier, many cases of children suffering from depression had come up. The effect of marking system even forced children to take drastic steps of suicide. The criteria for judging the students purely on the basis of marks seemed unfair. Marks below expectations led them to take such steps. Even at the difference of half or one mark, the career of the child would get affected. Therefore, it was positive to introduce grading system. Thus, the grading system has a great advantage over marking system in removing stress.

Many students face inferiority complex in case of getting fewer marks but grading system helps to fight against such complexes. Since the children are graded in fewer categories, marks are not revealed. Thus, it helps in removing and stops causing such complexes.

From the examiner's perspective, it considerably reduces inter and intra examiner's variability in marking. It also takes care of imperfection of tools used for assessment. Statistical research in assessment techniques indicate that there's a chance of variation of scores awarded to people within the grading system, golf stroke students of comparable potential in same ability bands (grades) mechanically takes care of all these aberrations in assessment techniques.

Everything has both positive and negative effects. Disadvantages of grading system are many. The grading system is de-motivating to those students who achieve the best marks after a lot of effort and hard work. His efforts would not be recognized and differentiated from others clearly. Students with best and very good marks will be graded in the same category. Similarly, the student getting least marks will be graded in the same category as a student with low marks. In short, weaker students get advantages but the good students face the disadvantages.

In the grading system, the students do not work as hard as they do in marking system. This is because of the simple reason that they know the results would be in grades which will not differentiate their efforts from others. The children do not learn hard or make effort to learn the lessons in deep as this would not make much difference. Thus, students take undue advantage of grading system by taking studies lightly. They have developed a carefree attitude towards studies. This is making them lazy and the spirit of hard work seems to be disappearing from students. After observing many students, it is apparent that without a system of scholastic comparison very few would strive to learn.

It is the world of high competition. In this time, leaving students free of hard work by introducing grading system will stop them from being progressive. However, putting too much pressure on them through marking system will also make them retaliate and show resistance from studies. Therefore, there has to be a balance between both the systems. It is obvious that the students, parents and the children need some parameters on the basis of which academic achievement can be measured.

Moreover, the objective of the grading system is to evaluate and students to experience success and failure not as reward and punishment, but as information. That seems to be a useful foundation on which to construct an alternative system for assessing teaching and learning. It's also a devastating indictment of grades, which are inevitably experienced as rewards and punishments.

In today's education system, it is becoming a challenge to the educators as to on what parameters a student's progress must be determined and through what means. They have to look at alternatives which will suffice the best for the students as well as for parents. With the conventional method of marking system being ruled out, the methods more prevalent are the grading system or use narrative reports, by which qualitative summaries of progress in written form can be given or teachers can have Conferences with students and/or their parents to discuss how things are going. However, it is significant to have a clear vision of the objective and means of evaluating the student for his positive progress and overall development.
