Indira Gandhi Was Our First Woman Prime Minister. She was the daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamla Nehru. She was born on 19th November 1917 at Allahabad. Her childhood name was Priyadarshani.

She got her early education at home. She later joined Shantiniketan started by Rabindra Nath Tagore. She was born with patriotic spirits as her grandfather Motilal Nehru and father were great patriots. She was highly impressed by Gandhiji when she visited the Sabarmati Ashram.

During her childhood, her grandfather and father were sent to jail many times. Her mother Kamala Nehru was sent to jail once because they all participated in the national movement. Indira Gandhi took he lessons in active politics from her father and great freedom fighter Jawaharlal Nehru. Her school and college life was disturbed many times.

In March 1926, she went to Europe along with her parents and got the education in Switzerland and Oxford for some time. She came back to India after her mother Kamala Nehru died in 1936.

Indira Gandhi got married to Feroze Gandhi in 1941. Feroze Gandhi was a highly educated person from the Parsi family. She was the mother of two children by 1946, Rajiv and Sanjay.

After the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi became the information and broadcasting minister in Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet. She was a great social worker and introduced several schemes for the country. She dedicated her life to the progress of her country in spite of the problems and challenges that came her way.

After the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of India on 24th January' 1966. She was the third lady in the world history to become Prime Minister.
She was the efficient leader of India. During her Prime Ministership, India won the India-Pakistan war in the year 1971.

However, she became unpopular after she declared an internal emergency, in June 1975. As a result, she was defeated in the elections of 1977. She, however, was reelected in December 1979.
She gave the order for the "Operation Blue Star” to liberate the famous Golden Temple of Amritsar from the clutches of the terrorists. After the Operation Blue Star, many people were against her. She was then killed by her own security guard on 31st October 1984.

Indira Gandhi would be remembered as one of the greatest leaders of India and one of the greatest women of India. She was indeed the face of powerful women in India. Her death was an immense loss to the nation.
