I am a banyan tree. Even today I vaguely remember the six-legged words of that Kabekar. From my mother’s stalk, maybe a pheasant threw me at this end of the roadside basepukura. A few days later I saw this beautiful world with my own eyes. Clouds shook hands with the pieces of the sky on the chest of the pressed redhead and told me to grow up. I got courage from the soil and developed slowly. Then my leafy six-leafed branches learned to match themselves firmly in front of the sun.

Essay on Autobiography of a Banyan Tree

Gradually I grew up. How many shelters the weary man found in my shadow. How many passers-by, unnamed old men and women come to me and rest. Sounds pretty good. I try to save them from the rain by raising the stalks. Ravi Tagore of Tayma wrote about one of our nations as he knew it-

The crows have made their home in a safe or shelter under my huge umbrella. The squirrel has run twice and found a hole in my branch. Exhausted kites come down from the distant sky in the scorching heat and sit on my branches. Occasionally the cuckoo comes and listens to the song, and I see how the crow hides in my leaves while looking for a nest. Besides, I don’t know how many birds sit on my body on the way to and from work.

In the name of that rain, I try to get the scent of Shravan forest by matching the leaves. Although people do not eat my fruit, they come to collect my leaves in worship. It hurt when the first leaf was torn, I used to be very angry but now I have become accustomed to it. Now the village panchayat has built an altar around me. People come and sit there in the rainy season and enjoy the gentle breeze.

Today I am burdened with age. What kind of fear arises when I see the Kalavaishakhi storm. I was startled by the sound of lightning. I am afraid that people will not cut me to pieces in need of road construction! Maybe for some reason, I have to leave in a few years. Yet the days that I am, the earth seemed to grow beautiful in the cradle of light-darkness and joy-pain. When thousands of people, animals, and birds are in the shadows in the air and the earth is in the illusion of life, my life is successful.
