Diwali is celebrated because it was on this day that Lord Sri Ram came back to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. He was returning home after defeating the evil Ravana. This was a matter of great joy and relief to the people of Ayodhya. They celebrated this day by illuminating the whole kingdom with lights.
