Gianni Versace: Gianni Versacewas a charismatic and accomplished Italian designer of clothing and theatre costumes. He was influenced by Andy Warhol and modern abstract art and considered one of the most colorful and talented designers of the late 20th century.

Although years of designing for the theatre earned him a respectable reputation in the fashion industry, it was his collaborations with American photographer, Richard Avedon that helped Versace become one of the world’s elite designers.

His 1982 collection introduced metallic garments that would become his trademark, and his elaborate stage costumes for Elton John in the late ’80s helped cement his reputation as one of the beautiful people. Gianni with his brother Santo and sister Donatella Versace were brought up in Reggio Calabria, by their father and dressmaker mother, Francesca.

He began his apprenticeship at a young age, helping his mother find precious stones and gold braid with which to embroider dresses. He contemplated engineering before moving to Milan at 25 years old to work in style design.

In the mid-seventies, his knits drew the attention of head-hunters at Genny and Callaghan. Complete employed him to plan their calfskin and softened cowhide accumulations, and a couple of years after the fact, energized by his prosperity, Versace introduced his first signature gathering for ladies at the Palazzo della Permanente Art Museum of Milan. His first menswear collection followed in September of 1978.

About Gianni Versace

Versace considered himself a tailor, rather than a designer. He knew how to cut and sew the clothes he made. He tried on the men’s collections personally and had his sister, Donatella try on the women’s clothing. The Versace look of the youthful, forceful and hot lady is outstanding. He jumped at the chance to make provocative garments for his ladies, skin-tight with low cuts and high cuts on the skirts.

Versace was among the first to revive the catsuit, to bring back the miniskirt, to show tights worn as trousers, to bring the bustier out at night and bead it. In 1982, his dresses made with fine metalwork initially showed up and were a hit.

In less than 10 years, Versace built an empire worth $808 million. He used celebrities, including Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, Naomi Campbell, Tina Turner, and even Tupac Shakur as models for both the runway and print ads.He was one of the first Italian designers to hire world-class photographers such as Richard Avedon to photograph his advertising campaigns, also using the top fashion models for these ads.

In 1982, Versace opened another section in his profession, making ensembles for the theater, drama, and ballet. He began a close collaboration with choreographer Maurice Bejart. He went on to design accessories, jewelry, furnishings, and China. He was also hired as a costume designer on the TV series, ‘Miami Vice’. This led to his relocation to Miami Beach.

The designer battled with a rare cancer of the inner ear. He was presumed to be in remission when, one July morning in the summer of 1997, returning from his customary walk on Ocean Drive, he was gunned down outside his ocean-front mansion in Miami Beach, Florida.

He was killed by binge executioner Andrew Cunanan, who ended it all not long after the homicide. Police revealed that Andrew Cunanan had ended it all utilizing a similar handgun that had been utilized to kill Gianni Versace.

In September 1997, Versace’s sibling, Santo Versace was reported as the new CEO of the Versace holding. Versace’s sister Donatella Versace is the new head of his designs. Elton John committed his 1997 collection, The Big Picture to Versace.
