Mahatma Gandhi:Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on second October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujrat. after his schooling in India, he visited England to study the law. He is known as the ‘Father of Nation’. By most of the people, he was affectionately called as ‘Bapu’. Hr brought independence to our country.

Bapu was very much inspired by the characters of King Harish Chandra and Shravan Bhakta. This is the reason that later he chose the path of truth and non-violence’. He also believed in service to the poor.’


He practiced law in South Africa. There he faced racial discrimination. He practiced peaceful resistance to racial discrimination and fought for the rights of Indians in South Africa. His weapons were Satyagraha and Ahimsa (truth and non-violence. After winning the battle there, he returned to India in 1916.


After coming to India, he became the leader of the national movement of freedom. Gandhiji opposed the unjust policies of the British rulers without any fear. His aim was to bring independence to the country and make it a self-reliant nation.


Gandhiji was a role model of ‘simple living and high thinking.’ He moved the masses with his sincerity, simplicity, and sacrifice. He was sent to jail many times with many other leaders.

Gandhiji also contributed a lot improve the conditions of women and weaker sections and backward classes of the society. He removed the caste barrier. He fought against untouchability. He called the untouchables as the Harijan, the children of God.

He told Indians to do manual labor. He advised the students to be self-dependant. He dedicated all his life in the upliftment of the poor. He believed that purity of soul can be brought by sacrifice and service of the poor.

Bapu was a great social reformer. He was a saint politician. His faith in God was firm and deep. He himself never uttered untruth and advised others too to be truthful always.


Gandhiji lived in the hearts of millions of Indians and was respected by all. His contribution to our country is unforgetful.


Gandhiji died an unnatural death. He was shot dead by an Indian on his way to attend a prayer on 30 January 1948. It was a cruel murder. His body was cremated at raj ghat in New Delhi. we tend to observe this present day because of the martyr day once a year. Gandhiji was really a noble soul.
